Flores is a gorgeous area in the north of Guatemala in the Peten Region, home to the charming Flores Island, the Maya ruins of Tikal and a dense jungle full of wildlife covering most of the region.
After exploring Flores Island from one end to the other and spending time in the surrounding region, we’ve scouted out the best areas to stay and the best hotels in Flores for a range of budgets.
If you’re tossing up whether to stay on Flores Island, go for a cheaper option on the mainland, stay at Tikal, or spend some time in a remote jungle lodge, we’ll run through the pros and cons, and help you decide where to stay in Flores.

Planning a trip to Flores, Guatemala
STOP! Before you keep reading this list of the best hotels in Flores, I’d recommend reading our Flores travel guide first. Which area to stay in Flores, Guatemala
Flores is a municipality in the Peten region of northern Guatemala. What ‘Flores’ actually means is a bit confusing to a first-time visitor, ourselves included, which makes it really hard to choose where to stay!
The municipality of Flores is divided into a few different towns:
- 🏝️ Isla de Flores: or Flores Island, this is the tourist heart of Flores and the place you want to be. The tiny island in Lago Peten Itza is connected to the mainland by a causeway (aka bridge), but you feel like you’re in a completely different area. It’s considered the ‘old town’ of Flores, and the cobblestone streets are full of colourful historic buildings. There’s a great range of hostels and hotels, and fantastic cafes and restaurants. In my opinion, this is where you want to base yourself in Flores. The majority of my recommendations will be for options on the island.
- 🏘️ Santa Elena: across the causeway from Flores Island is the town of Santa Elena. This is the commercial hub of Flores and is where you will find the main bus terminal, airport, mall and other amenities like banks, phone shops, large supermarkets etc. It felt busy, noisy and like any other town, without the charm or appeal of the island. You’ll no doubt transit through here at some point, but in my opinion, you don’t really want to stay here. There are a lot of hostels and hotels, and most are cheaper, but I’d still opt for a crappier hotel on Flores Island than something nicer in Santa Elena. You won’t find any recommendations for hotels in Santa Elena in this article.
- 🌿 San Miguel peninsula: sitting across the lake, north of Flores Island is the San Miguel peninsula. This jungle-clad finger of land is not an island and is accessible by road, although travelling there by boat is common and quicker. There is a handful of remote, luxurious jungle lodges in this area. I wouldn’t stay here for the duration of your stay in Flores, as you’re quite isolated and won’t get to experience the charm of the island. Plus, once you arrive at one of these lovely lodges I guarantee you won’t want to leave, so I think it’s best done as a complement to a stay on the island if you’ve got an extra few days to add on and want a jungle experience. I’ve got a few options at the end of this post.
- 🛕 Tikal: the ancient Mayan city of Tikal is one of the main reasons people visit Flores and northern Guatemala, and there are a handful of places you can stay at the entrance to the park. Similar to the jungle lodge scenario, I don’t think staying at Tikal should replace a stay on Flores Island, but if you’re keen to explore the archaeological site in-depth over multiple days, I think a 1 – 2 night stay there can be an amazing jungle experience.

Los Amigos Hostel is the place to stay in Flores, it’s an island institution.
Whether you stay at the hostel or not, you’ll no doubt spend some time here, either in their amazing Secret Garden Restaurant or booking tours or transport at their travel agency.
They’ve got dorms and private rooms, plenty of spaces to hang out in their lush indoor jungle, and they’ve even got a soundproofed bar, so if you want to drink and party you can, or if you want to sleep, you won’t be disturbed!

Hotel Peten Express is another great hostel in Flores, right on the lake. It might not be as big or popular as Los Amigos, but it wins for the location.
They only offer dorm rooms, but they’ve got AC and hot water and the beds are super comfortable. Breakfast is included daily too.
The best part is the swimming pool overlooking the lake, right in front of the sunset! You can swim up to the bar, order a cocktail and enjoy the sunset. Perfect for the steamy temperatures in Flores.

3. Casa Maya Itza

If you’re on a budget but you want something private, Casa Maya Itza is hands down the best option on the island.
Rooms start from just $30 USD per night, with private bathrooms and AC. They’re basic and a bit dated, but spacious, well-equipped and exceptionally clean.
They have a communal kitchen which is amazing if you’re trying to keep some costs down, and a nice rooftop terrace with hammocks and a good view of the lake. The staff are super friendly and helpful.
This is an absolute bargain, and perfect for couples. You can save a lot compared with two dorm beds, and get total privacy.

Mid-range hotels in Flores
4. Hotel Villa del Lago

Hotel Villa del Lago is a very charming Mediterranean-style option right on the lake shore on the east side of the island. Think white-washed building with blue balconies, and a grand terrace overlooking the lake.
You won’t get the sunset being the east side, but it’s much quieter here. A few rooms include lake views, which I think is worth the upgrade. Otherwise, there is a big shared terrace to soak up the views. Breakfast is included daily on the terrace too.
The rooms are simple but clean, light and airy, and have AC which is the most important thing!

5. Hotel Casazul

Hotel Casazul is a solid and well-rated lakefront option with a big rooftop terrace. It’s got gorgeous sunset views, and as the name suggests, casa azul (blue house), you can’t miss it from the outside!
The property doesn’t have a pool, but guests are able to use the pools of two neighbouring hotels under the same management.
The rooms are spacious and modern, and the AC is strong which is so important! I’d recommend paying a tiny bit extra for a lake-view room. They offer free coffee in the morning.

Their rooms are clean and bright, with hot water and good AC. I think it’s worth the small extra price to get a lake view room. Some even have private terraces.
There is also a large shared terrace and an on-site restaurant with great food at good prices. They offer breakfast but it’s not included in most room rates.

Hotel Isla de Flores is the nicest hotel on the island. You’ll see it constantly as you wander around, you can’t miss the distinctive white building with turquoise balconies and murals painted all over it.
The rooms are spacious and sophisticated, with local styling and decor. You can feel the quality and style are more elevated than the mid-range options on the island. The king suites have a large bathtub in the room.
The hotel has a great rooftop pool with amazing lake and sunset views. There’s a bar up there too, Mangos Bar, which shakes up some delicious cocktails and often has live music. Their on-site restaurant Achiote is fantastic, and they’ve got the Delirio cafe on the ground floor. It’s a one-stop shop!

Hotel Casona de la Isla is gorgeous. I really think it’s a competitor for best hotel on the island, especially if you like to be self-contained.
They offer apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes which is handy for self-catering and being completely independent, which we love. They’ve also got a restaurant on-site and breakfast is included daily.
Their pool area is one of the biggest on the island, it’s like a tropical oasis overlooking the lake. They even have a hot tub (although I’m not sure when it would be cool enough to use it!).

It overlooks the lake with a big airy rooftop patio. There’s a small swimming pool which is a lifesaver in the heat, and breakfast is included at a neighbouring hotel each morning.
The rooms are modern and clean, with a light and airy feel. They have great AC, hot water and comfy beds.

Remote jungle lodges around Flores
I definitely recommend staying on Flores Island for the bulk of your stay. But if you’ve got a bit of extra time free and you’re looking for an immersive jungle-style experience, there are some fantastic hotels scattered around the shores of Lake Peten Itza.
As I said, I wouldn’t want this to be my only base in Flores, but if you’ve got a few nights to tack on at the end after you’ve done your sightseeing, there are some gorgeous properties with lots of wildlife and on-site trails and nature tours.
If you’ve just come from, or are heading onwards to Semuc Champey, you may not need to have this experience in Flores, as most of the accommodations in this area are very eco-lodge vibes, in a remote jungle area.
Once you arrive, you won’t want to leave (especially given they are on the pricier side), so don’t try and use one of these lodges as a base for exploring the region. Dedicate some time to soak it up and enjoy the property and its amenities.

Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel is an unmatched luxury in the jungle. Set on the lush grounds of a private nature reserve, you’ll feel completely hidden away in your own world, overlooking the lagoon and dense forest.
Rooms are suite-style, crafted with wood and other local materials that feel perfectly blended with the environment. Each suite has its own private deck and hot tub, some perched on the shores of the lagoon.

Villa Maya is a stunning eco-friendly retreat nestled in the jungle between two lagoons, just a short drive from the heart of Flores.
A much more affordable lodge option than some of its counterparts, Villa Maya has the perfect blend of comfort and sustainability. Their bungalows feature rustic decor with modern amenities, with private balconies with breathtaking views of the lagoons and jungle.
They’ve got nature trails to explore, with plenty of bird and wildlife spotting opportunities. They even have binoculars you can rent! There is a swimming pool, and the two lagoons mean you can see the sunrise and sunset each day.
They include breakfast daily, and the restaurant has a menu for lunch and dinner that isn’t too pricey. They can coordinate transport from Flores.

Hotels in Tikal
In a similar vein to the jungle lodges around Flores, I wouldn’t stay at Tikal instead of staying on Flores Island. However, it’s a great addition to your time in this part of Guatemala!
Chances are you’re visiting Tikal, and if you’re interested in extending your experience and immersing yourself in the jungle, there are a handful of lodging options at the entrance to the park. It makes it a lot easier to navigate sunrise and/or sunset tours if you’re staying on-site, and it gives history buffs a chance to explore the ancient city over multiple days.

Jungle Lodge Hotel is about as luxurious as you can get in the middle of the jungle next to an ancient Mayan city!
They’ve got a range of bungalows nestled into the jungle, most have a big bathtub to soak in, and the higher room categories have their tubs outside under the canopy. The perfect place to come back and soak weary muscles after a long day of trekking around the park!
There is a sprawling pool overlooking the jungle, a great restaurant and helpful staff to organise transport and tours. Everything is of the highest quality and they do a fantastic job delivering a high-end experience with very few amenities in a remote location.

Not quite as nice as the Jungle Lodge but at a more affordable price point, Hotel Tikal Inn is the best mid-range option at Tikal.
All the rooms are private with private bathrooms. They’re slightly dated, but clean and spacious.
There is a big swimming pool and a restaurant on-site, and of course, an amazing location in the midst of the jungle, where you can sleep to the sound of the trees and wake up to howler monkeys.

if you’re on a budget, Jungle Lodge Hostal is the best place to stay at Tikal (unless you feel like sleeping in a hammock in the campground!).
It’s part of the broader Jungle Lodge Hotel complex, but they have a separate, more basic hostel section with affordable private rooms with shared bathrooms. They don’t have dorms, and it’s not cheap by hostel standards, but you get to enjoy the amenities of the hotel for much less than their standard room rates.
You can enjoy the huge swimming pool overlooking the jungle, a great restaurant and wildlife running around all over the property!

Hotels in Flores Guatemala: Final thoughts
There are so many fantastic hotels in Flores Guatemala I know it can be hard to narrow it down to just one! I hope this post helped you make your decision, and that you’ve got a better idea of where you want to base yourself.
