Looking for the best places to eat and drink in Flores? Youâre in the right place!
Located in the far north of Guatemala, amongst the dense jungle and ancient Maya ruins, Flores is a charming little island set on the shores of Lake Peten Itza.
The island might be tiny, but man, it is full of some great restaurants, bars and cafes!
We adored Flores, and part of the reason why was that there were sooo many good places to eat and drink. The island itself is so charming, and it’s perfectly complimented by leafy cafes, rooftop bars overlooking the lake and cosy restaurants with international and Guatemalan cuisine.
We spent five days in Flores and couldnât even get through our whole âto eatâ list. Mainly because there were so many good places we had to go back to a second and even a third time! It was hard to narrow down, but these are our 10 favourite restaurants in Flores, Guatemala.

1. Maracuya
- đ´ Eat here for: breakfast, lunch or dinner
- â° Opening hours: 7:00 am â 10:00 pm daily, except Tuesday
- đ° Approximate cost: loaded toasts 60Q, smoothie bowls 65Q, pad thai 65Q
- đĽ Must order: pad thai, loaded toasts
Maracuya is hands down the best restaurant on Flores Island. Whether youâre visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner, theyâve got great options.
Before I get to the food, the restaurant itself is so beautiful. You wander down a rickety dock on the lake to get to the front door, and then enter an oasis! There are plants everywhere, and there is even a butterfly sanctuary on the bottom floor.
As cute as it is downstairs, keep walking upstairs to the rooftop. Itâs a jungle up there, with lush greenery everywhere, and gorgeous views over the lake.
We visited multiple times across our five days in Flores we loved it that much. We sampled breakfast, lunch and dinner menu options and everything we tried was delicious! Their food is fresh, light and healthy and they have a variety of cuisines on their menu.
For breakfast, I loved their loaded toasts, and as someone who can never choose between sweet and savoury, having a mix of both in one dish was perfect. Their smoothie bowls were delicious and looked just as nice.
We loved their Thai dishes for dinner, we tried the pad thai and curry, and both were surprisingly good considering we were in Guatemala!
2. Secret Garden Restaurant
- đ´ Eat here for: breakfast, lunch or dinner
- â° Opening hours: 7:00 am â 9:00 pm daily
- đ° Approximate cost: breakfast options 50Q, poke bowls 100Q+, burgers 75Q
- đĽ Must order: poke bowl, juices
Located inside Los Amigos Hostel, Secret Garden is as exactly as the name suggests! Hidden away behind an inconspicuous interior, once you step inside youâre literally in an indoor jungle.
The restaurant has a big focus on fresh, healthy food with lots of vegetarian options. We had a really nice poke bowl here, and a maracuya (passionfruit) juice. They have all kinds of cuisines though, with pizza, burgers, pitas, Asian options, bar snacks etc.
Itâs a little on the pricey side, and we only ate here once, but we did think it was worth it for the atmosphere and amazing garden. Being a hostel itâs always busy, but we didnât feel awkward or uncomfortable being there but not being guests.
3. Sky Bar
- đ´ Eat here for: drinks
- â° Opening hours: 11:00 am â 12:00 am daily
- đ° Approximate cost: 30Q happy hour cocktails
- đĽ Must order: mojitos
This is more of a where to drink in Flores rather than eat, but I couldnât leave Sky Bar off this list! An island institution, this has got to be the best place for sunset drinks.
Their rooftop is the perfect vantage point to see the sun go down over the lake, and theyâve got great happy hour deals. Happy hour runs from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm (at least when we visited) and theyâve got 2-for-1 deals on a range of beers and cocktails.
The bartenders are far from mixologists, but it is dirt cheap (we paid 30Q for two mojitos when we visited), the vibes are good and the view is sensational.
Check the sunset time and be sure to get there at least an hour early to snag a table. It gets really busy and the rooftop isnât actually that big. There are only a handful of seats that look directly at the sunset without obstruction, so you want to nab one of those early.
They do have a food menu, but Iâve heard it isnât that great. Have dinner elsewhere, just enjoy some drinks here.
4. Maple y Tocino
- đ´ Eat here for: breakfast
- â° Opening hours: 7:00 am â 9:00 pm daily
- đ° Approximate cost: waffles 50Q+, avo toasts 50Q, milkshakes 35Q
- đĽ Must order: waffles, avocado toasts and extravagant milkshakes
Maple y Tocino (maple and bacon) has the best breakfast on the island! Although they are open all day for lunch and dinner too, Iâd recommend coming in the morning.
They have a huge range of sweet and savoury waffles, some you can sub out for French toast or crepes instead. Being the sweet tooth I am, I went with a Nutella, strawberry, banana and ice cream waffle and it was gooood.
They have a whole menu of avocado toasts with different toppings, which Brayden had. The bread was really nice (not always common in Central America) and it came with a serving of fresh fruit salad. All their breakfast options come with unlimited Americano coffee too!
We didnât get one (I felt the Nutella waffles were probably enough sweets for the morning!), but they have famous milkshakes, served with an actual doughnut sitting on top.
Their location is lovely, right on the waterfront and you can sit and enjoy your breakfast overlooking the lake.
5. Bistro Puertas del Cielo
- đ´ Eat here for: dinner
- â° Opening hours: 12:30 pm â 9:00 pm daily, except Sunday
- đ° Approximate cost: pasta dishes 100Q+
- đĽ Must order: customised pasta
Bistro Puertas del Cielo is a very unique restaurant concept in Flores. Owned by an Italian man, Bernie, this restaurant has no menu.
Once you are seated, Bernie will come and chat with you about your preferences, any dietary requirements and what fresh produce and protein he has available that day. Based on that, his chefs will whip you up a custom-made dish.
I would highly recommend opting for pasta, but they can make you whatever you feel like. They often serve up meat/seafood dishes with sides, all with an Italian and Guatemalan flair, made from fresh local ingredients.
We both went for pasta, mine was a vegetable with red sauce, and Braydenâs was a creamy white sauce with prawns. My dish in particular was absolutely delicious, and we were so stuffed, the servings were huge.
We hate going anywhere without prices listed, and we always get a bit antsy wondering what the bill is going to be, but it was nowhere near as bad as we thought. The pasta dishes were 95Q each, and we both had a glass of wine for 30Q each, for a total of 250Q.
Just over $30 USD for a fancy dinner in a nice restaurant with a glass of wine isnât too bad at all!
6. Delirio
- đ´ Eat here for: breakfast or lunch
- â° Opening hours: 7:00 am â 8:00 pm daily
- đ° Approximate cost: cappuccino 20Q, stuffed croissant 35Q, sandwiches 60Q
- đĽ Must order: coffee, sweet treats
Sitting on the bottom floor of the Hotel Isla de Flores, Delirio is a cute little cafe and bakery. The coffee here was probably the best we had on the island. They have a proper espresso machine and we went back multiple times throughout our stay (especially when we got back from our sunrise tour to Tikal, caffeine was required to get through the rest of the day!).
Theyâve got a big window full of cakes and pastries, making it near impossible for someone as indecisive as me to choose! I tried a few of their pastries and they were all good. Brayden had some baguettes and sandwiches which were nice for lunch.
Itâs a super cute space, with bright murals on the walls and pink wrought iron tables. Itâs not on the lake though, so we didnât want to hang out here or work on our laptops for a long time, but it was still nice.
7. Tacos Los Peces
- đ´ Eat here for: lunch or dinner
- â° Opening hours: inconsistent, usually lunchtime to evening
- đ° Approximate cost: tacos (3) 12Q, burritos (2) 15Q
- đĽ Must order: tacos and burritos
The first thing I want to say is that this is NOT a Mexican standard of tacos. If youâve just come from Mexico, youâll probably be disappointed. But if you want cheap, good food in Flores, then this is a great option!
Located in the park at the top of the island, the opening hours are pretty inconsistent. We tried every day to come, but they werenât open until our final day. Theoretically, they should be open for lunch and dinner most days.
They have a range of Mexican dishes, like tacos, burritos, super burros, tortas and tostadas, and you can choose your protein. They can do vegetarian options too. Make sure you load up on their different habanero salsas and toppings.
They also have a range of aguas frescas or refrescos as theyâre usually called in Guatemala, which reminded us of Mexico. We loved the tamarindo and horchata.
8. Terrazo
- đ´ Eat here for: lunch or dinner
- â° Opening hours: 12:00 pm â 10:00 pm daily
- đ° Approximate cost: 90Q + for pizza
- đĽ Must order: pizza
Terrazo has one of the best locations on the island. Sitting right on the lake with a perfect sunset vantage point from their terrace, this is the best place to come for dinner if you want to eat while the sun is setting.
Itâs one of a few Italian restaurants in Flores, and they serve up a good range of pizzas and pasta.
We shared a pizza here, and it was a nice, thin crust. I prefer my pizza on the crunchy side and I feel like itâs never cooked enough. This one could have used a bit longer in the oven, but with the thin base, it wasnât too bad. Theyâve got lots of meat and vegetarian topping options.
We didnât try the pasta, but it gets rave reviews!
9. Yogulato
- đ´ Eat here for: dessert
- â° Opening hours: 10:00 am – 10:00 pm daily
- đ° Approximate cost: ice cream cup 25Q
- đĽ Must order: mango and cardamom lassi flavour frozen yoghurt
I canât have a list of the best restaurants in Flores without mentioning dessert!
Yogulato is a frozen yogurt and ice cream shop. Itâs located on the western side of the island, with a perfect view of the sunset. I canât think of a better way to end the day than with an ice cream by the lake, watching the sun go down in the steamy Flores heat.
We had a mango and cardamon lassi-flavoured froyo and oh my goodness it was DELICIOUS! I still dream about it to this day, and I went back every day and got the same thing it was that good.
Donât skip dessert!
10. Cool Beans
- đ´ Eat here for: breakfast, lunch or dinner
- â° Opening hours: 7:00 am â 9:00 pm daily, except Sunday
- đ° Approximate cost: burritos 40Q+, smoothies 25Q
- đĽ Must order: burritos, cinnamon rolls and smoothies
Full disclosure, I donât think Cool Beans deserves the reputation it has. Itâs always featured on lists of best restaurants in Flores, but we didnât find it anywhere near as good as Maracuya or other options.
BUT, it is really affordable and yes, Iâm including it on my list too.
If you go in with the right expectations, you can get a good feed here. The coffee, food and drinks are nowhere near the same calibre as its neighbours, but, theyâve got a diverse menu with filling options for very reasonable prices, so I wouldnât knock it completely.
Itâs a welcoming, cosy space with a lush indoor garden area and a patio out the back overlooking the lake. They have hammocks and comfy lounges, and it’s a nice place to relax for a few hours and work, trip plan or read.
Their burritos are a great option, the smoothies are good and the cinnamon rolls are particularly tasty!
Honourable mentions
We couldn’t get around to all the best restaurants in Flores, and there are a few key places that we missed that I know most people love.
If you’ve got a bit more time in your eating schedule than we did, we’d recommend checking out:
- Restaurante Tipico Imperio #1 or #2
- Achiote
- L’Idiot
- San Telmo
- Restaurante Raices
Please let me know if you try any of them!
Final thoughts: Where to eat in Flores
I hope this helps you plan your own âto eatâ list for Flores! Whether youâve worked up an appetite trekking through the jungle of Tikal, or youâre in need of a coffee break during your island strolls, there are so many options to choose from!
Antigua might get all the attention when it comes to dining and cafes, and there are some fantastic restaurants in Antigua. But Flores was a close competitor in our opinion. Plus it had lakefront views! If I could teleport back to the rooftop of Maracuya, I would.
