Choosing where to stay in Drake Bay

This remote, untouched paradise on the Osa Peninsula is one of the best places to immerse yourself in Costa Rica’s raw and wild nature.

Despite its far-flung location, there are some amazing accommodation options in and around Drake Bay.

They take advantage of the stunning natural environment, designed in harmony with nature. Think epic eco lodges, birds on your balcony and sleeping to the sounds of the sea.

No matter your budget, it’s not hard to find somewhere lovely to stay. However, you do have some choice in location, and it can be confusing to determine where the best fit is for your travel plans, style, and the type of transport you’ll be using to get to Drake Bay.

The way I see it, there are three different areas that you can choose to stay in Drake Bay:

  • 🏘️ In the village in Agujitas
  • 🌊 On a remote beach
  • 🌿 In the jungly area outside of town

Staying in Agujitas, Drake Bay’s main village, is the most convenient option, with easy access to food, tours and amenities. But the beauty of Drake Bay is in the variety of remote, eco-lodges deep in the pristine nature the area is known for.

If you’re coming all the way here, I think opting for a nature-based stay will give you the complete experience.

You can stay in the heart of the jungle, spotting wildlife from your room. Or on a remote beach, accessible only by boat or walking. But it can be a toss-up, as these isolated lodges often sacrifice convenience and accessibility.

In this post, I’m going to run through the pros and cons of each of these options to help decide which is right for you, as well as suggest some of the best Drake Bay hotels in each area for all budgets.

Staying in Agujitas Village

Staying in the centre of town offers the most convenience. You will be within walking distance of restaurants and the main beach, Playa Colorado, where most of the tours depart from, as well as the boat from Sierpe.

There are accommodations for all styles and budgets here, but most options feel more β€˜standard’ and aren’t necessarily designed to be an immersive nature experience.

πŸ‘πŸ» PROS OF STAYING IN AGUJITAS VILLAGE

  • Easy access to restaurants and supermarkets in town
  • Can walk to the departure point for most tours, avoiding extra fees for pick-ups
  • Can drive here if you have a car
  • Easy access if you’re taking the boat from Sierpe

πŸ‘ŽπŸ» CONS OF STAYING IN AGUJITAS VILLAGE

  • Don’t get the immersive jungle / remote beach experience
  • Won’t see much wildlife at your accommodation
  • The main beach is not that nice for swimming or relaxing

🏘️ Recommendation: whether you have a car or not, stay here if you want to experience Drake Bay town and have full convenience for all food and tours

Pacheco Tours and Cabinas covered balcony with a hammock and rustic wooden chairs overlooking the ocean and tropical gardens in Drake Bay.

This is where we stayed in Drake Bay, and we can highly recommend it! The cabins are right in the centre of town, and they are spacious, clean and comfortable.

The best part is the private balcony with a hammock overlooking the bay! We spent every afternoon having a sundowner and enjoying the view. It was so peaceful and tropical, despite having easy walking access to everything in town.

Amazing value for the price.

A tropical villa in Sunset Lodge Drake Bay with a private pool, surrounded by lush greenery and sun loungers under a clear blue sky.

A very highly rated option, sitting on a hill above town overlooking the bay.

Most rooms have some basic kitchen facilities like a mini-fridge and a coffee-maker, but there is also a fully self-contained house for rent if you want to self-cater. Breakfast isn’t included as a standard, but for a small fee you can it specially cooked for you, and it looks delicious!

Aerial view of a hillside lodge in Rancho Corcovado Drake Bay, Costa Rica, with multiple green-roofed buildings nestled in dense tropical forest.

One of the OG β€˜resorts’ in Drake Bay, I personally think Rancho Corcovado is a little bit tired.

It’s in an excellent location right on Playa Colorada, with boats arriving and departing on your doorstep, and the heart of the village just a few steps away.

Rooms and grounds have a nice tropical feel, but are probably due for a renovation at some point. If you want something luxurious, look elsewhere, but if you just want a laidback beachside vibe at a typical hotel, this is a solid choice.

Secluded wooden jungle cabin in Aguila de Osa Rainforest Lodge Drake Bay with a green tin roof, a wraparound porch, rocking chairs, and a hammock, nestled in tropical vegetation.

This option just sneaks into the β€˜town’ location. It is very near the start of the Drake Bay Hiking Trail, so technically it’s more of a beach accommodation, but it’s no more than a 15-minute walk to the heart of town.

A great choice if you want the best of both worlds. It feels like a typical eco-lodge, created around the jungle with wooden cabaΓ±as and beautiful rainforest and ocean views.

They have a private dock area on an inlet of the Rio Agujitas, where they can organise tours to the national park and CaΓ±o Island.

A luxurious, high-end option that gives you the best of both worlds – seclusion with access.

Just a few minutes (steep!) walk from town, this gem offers incredible jungle and ocean views from modern, airy and considered rooms with beautifully manicured grounds.

They have a dreamy, open-air bathroom where you can overlook the bay or spot monkeys and birds in the trees as you shower. The definition of tropical paradise!

You have the option to choose a rate with full or half board. Three meals a day are offered at the resort, and guests rave about the quality of the food.

Outdoor jacuzzi in Cotingas Hotel overlooking Drake Bay at sunset, with warm water bubbling and a panoramic view of the coastline and anchored boats.

I think this property is an absolute steal and probably one of the best value options in town. It’s centrally located, but perched up on a hill, so you’re surrounded by jungle with sweeping views of the bay.

Most of the rooms are stand-alone bungalows with to-die-for views. There are lots of different room categories with varying amenities, some with kitchens. Some are newer than others, so look closely at what you’re booking.

The higher room categories look worth the splurge, and some even have spa baths on the balcony with ocean views!

Staying on a remote beach

If you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-track experience in Drake Bay with easy access to the beach, there are accommodations scattered along the coastline outside of town. Most are accessible via the Drake Bay Hiking Trail, or by boat.

πŸ‘πŸ» PROS OF STAYING ON A REMOTE BEACH

  • Stay right on a beautiful beach that is more suited to swimming and chilling
  • Have one of the best activities on your doorstep, the Drake Bay Hiking Trail
  • Be more immersed in the jungle and see lots of wildlife from your room
  • Stay in a unique and nature-based accommodation
  • Most tours can pick you up via boat, or accommodations offer their own tours

πŸ‘ŽπŸ» CONS OF STAYING ON A REMOTE BEACH

  • A long walk or an expensive boat ride into town
  • Trapped into eating most meals at your accommodation
  • Can’t drive your car there (except for 4Γ—4 access to Playa Rincon)
  • Some land-based tours won’t accept reservations or offer pick-ups

🌊 Recommendation: if you want a nature experience and you’re happy to sacrifice food and restaurant variety, go for a beach option! Especially if you don’t have a car

Developed in harmony with the rainforest, there is an abundance of wildlife around the property. They don’t know the boundaries of the park, and previous guests have seen tapirs (!!!), monkeys, sloths, anteaters and more.

Rooms are light, bright and modern, and you’ve got a virtually private beach on your doorstep!

Given the location, three meals a day are included in their excellent restaurant.

Jaguars Jungle Lodge in Drake Bay Costa Rica with right minimalist bedroom with white walls, high vaulted ceiling, dark wood floors, and large corner windows overlooking lush greenery.
Cozy tropical-style bedroom with a thatched ceiling, king bed with a patterned runner, wood accents, and a large fish painting above the bed.

πŸ’‘ Top tip – Jaguars Jungle Lodge offers a 10-bed dorm room. So even if you’re on a budget, you can still enjoy this luxurious eco-lodge! For a dorm bed with full board, expect to pay around $80 USD per night!

Staying outside of town in the jungle

There are a handful of remote accommodations scattered on the outskirts of town and into the forest that aren’t near the beach. The reality of how β€˜jungly’ it is depends on the accommodation, but these options all offer a more remote experience than staying in the heart of town.

πŸ‘πŸ» PROS OF STAYING IN THE JUNGLE

  • Road access to these accommodations (some 4Γ—4 only)
  • More immersive nature experience, peaceful and tranquil
  • Higher chance of spotting wildlife and birds around your accommodations

πŸ‘ŽπŸ» CONS OF STAYING IN THE JUNGLE

  • Some accommodations are only accessible by 4Γ—4, no boat option either
  • Trapped into eating most meals at your accommodation if you don’t have a car
  • Depending on your location, some tours will charge extra fees for pick up or won’t offer the service at all

🌿 Recommendation: only stay in these locations if you are coming to Drake Bay by car

Pacheco Tours Rainforest Cabins covered outdoor patio with black chairs, a small table, and a hammock overlooking a lush green lawn and dense tropical forest.

Sister property to the option in town, if you’ve got a 4×4 car and want to have a few days off-grid, this is a great, affordable option.

These self-contained, solar-powered cabins have everything you need for a few days in the jungle. Come stocked with ingredients to cook, but there are a few sodas in nearby Los Planes village and around Las Caletas.

We stayed here and loved it. It was the perfect place to rest and reflect after Corcovado. The owner has built a bird-watching platform in the rainforest, which is a very special and unique experience. You should see toucans!

Despite being in the rainforest, you’re actually not that far from Las Caletas beach either, so you can quite easily connect with the Drake Bay Trail or hike into town if you’d like.

Camping in Drake Bay

If you’re camping in Costa Rica (with a Nomad America 4Γ—4 or otherwise), Drake Bay has a few different places to park up for the night!

Just remember that car access in this area is tricky, and the roads are poorly made and often impassable, especially after rain. Don’t assume any car can drive to these camp spots.

not sure I’m any closer to choosing, but I’m down to Las Cotingas for in-town or Finca Maresia for a little bit of a walk (on top of the regular long-walks we intend)! Either looks like a good pick!
